Holding MLAs accountable

The following is a letter I have sent to the Canadian Medical Association - I encourage all voters that feel their MLA deceived them in the May 2009 provincial election to write to their professional associations and request they be removed from membership.

Dear Dr. Golbey:

I am writing this letter in the hopes that you can rectify a serious matter. Dr. Moira Stilwel is an elected MLA in our legislature. She is a doctor who ran for office under her medical banner – using self-promoting material emphasizing her connection with the medical community. This, of course, preyed upon the conceptions the general public has of doctors – and their moral and respectable character traits.

Well, as you may be aware, the “elected” government in British Columbia deceived and misled the voters prior, and right up to and after the May 2009 election. They, under Gordon Campbell, now have revealed themselves as deceivers – and Dr Stilwel is complicit in this. Complicit even to the point whereby she took a ministerial posting as a reward (not in the health care area of course). In any event, I would like for you to review her accreditation with the CMA and, upon discovering her disgrace to the moral and ethical values the CMA – the values I believe it promotes – suspend her credentials. I need not remind you that you are a senior member of a “self-governing” body – and the public depends upon that body for credibility and enforcement of ethical behavior on the part of its members.

Dr. Stilwel, in using her credentials in self-promotion (and still using them in her MLA profile), has caused the bar of respectability to be lowered for doctors in this country – and by being aware of the suffering the Provincial Liberal Party intended to inflict upon the middle; lower middle and lower classes of the population puts her in direct violation of numbers: 4; 7; and 9 of the CMA’s “Fundamental Responsibilities”, as well as her oath to “do no harm”.
